“The future starts today, not tomorrow.”
Thinking in our dreams, and following our strategic plan, new plantations are our way to build this future.
We received few weeks ago a truck with 16.000 new olive trees to be planted in our orchards, as part of our olives grove renewal.
The future starts today, not tomorrow.
Potted trees are normally 30 to 35 inches tall (75-80 cm) with numerous side branches, and have arrived at Losada after one year at the nursery.
When to plant is important for the acclimatization of the trees to new soil and weather conditions, so January is a good moment in Andalucía, because it will provide the trees with the maximum amount of time to adapt before the following winter.
The tree sap flow is stopped, so that will be the best moment to support the tree adaptation, avoiding the stress of the tree because of the new conditions.
Stakes have been previously placed taking into account the farm design.
For planting it is necessary to dig a hole about the same size as the container, remove the tree from its pot, and examine the roots before planting.
In a few days we will tie them to the stakes to guarantee the verticality of the olive tree.
This estate is a dry farming (without irrigation).
During a few months the new tiny trees will stay planted, without any additional activity from us, with the only goal being to get adapted to the new situation.
In spring we will cut the ends and nip them, to provoke the sap shock and naturally force the offshoot or branching development.
But that will be during the spring…
John Legend says that “The future started yesterday and we’re already late.” Fortunately we were planting new olive trees yesterday as well.
